Skate 3 Browser Not Working

Most browser build failures are one of six problems, and each one has a different cause. Find your symptom below instead of reinstalling your browser at random.

Short answer

A black frame usually means GPU rendering failed, a loading state that never changes usually means the data stream stalled, and a controller that is not detected is usually a connection-order problem. Change one thing at a time and reload.

Find your symptom

Work top to bottom. If the first fix does not change anything, move to the next symptom rather than repeating the same reload.

  • The frame stays black

    What it usually means

The page loaded but the build could not draw anything. That almost always means GPU rendering is unavailable or hardware acceleration is off, not that the build is broken.

    What to do

    1. Turn hardware acceleration back on in your browser settings and restart the browser completely.
    2. Check whether your browser reports WebGPU support. If it does not, use the build that does not require it.
    3. Update your GPU driver, then reload the page and press play again.
  • It is stuck on loading

    What it usually means

The build streams a large game data file. A stalled stream, a proxy or an offline-expecting extension can leave the loading state frozen even though the tab is healthy.

    What to do

    1. Leave it a full minute before you judge it. A first load is genuinely slow.
    2. Open your browser network panel and confirm data requests are still arriving. If they are not, reload once.
    3. Disable extensions that block or rewrite requests, then reload. Ad blockers and privacy proxies are common culprits.
  • It says WebGPU is unsupported

    What it usually means

The rebuilt version has no rendering fallback. Without WebGPU it cannot start, however fast your machine is.

    What to do

    1. Confirm you are on a recent Chromium-based browser on desktop, since WebGPU support varies by platform and version.
    2. Check the browser's feature flags and GPU diagnostics page to see whether WebGPU is reported as available.
    3. If it is not available, play the fan project instead. It does not depend on WebGPU.
  • My controller is not detected

    What it usually means

The build looks for a controller when it starts. Plugging one in afterwards often does nothing, and some controllers need the browser to see a button press before they appear.

    What to do

    1. Connect the controller, press one of its buttons, and only then reload the page and start the game.
    2. Try a wired connection or a different USB port. Wireless dongles are the usual weak point.
    3. Use the keyboard mapping while you troubleshoot, so a controller problem does not stop you playing.
  • There is no sound

    What it usually means

Browsers block audio until you interact with the page, and the game has its own volume state. Starting without a click leaves audio muted.

    What to do

    1. Click inside the game frame once, then check the in-game audio settings.
    2. Check the tab is not muted and that your system output device is the one you expect.
    3. Reload the page and press play with a click rather than an autoplay path.
  • It runs but the frame rate is terrible

    What it usually means

These builds render on your GPU and stream their world over the network, so they compete with every other tab and application you have open.

    What to do

    1. Close other tabs and heavy applications, then reload and start the game again.
    2. Play fullscreen. It removes browser chrome and can recover a noticeable amount of frame rate.
    3. Lower the game's own graphics settings if the build exposes them, and reduce your display resolution rather than fighting the build.

When nothing helps

Open the original project instead. It is the build's own page, it may be updated ahead of what we embed, and it is where the project's own issue tracker lives.

Troubleshooting questions

+Reloading made it worse. Why?

Because a reload restarts the data stream. On a slow connection, reloading mid-load throws away the progress you already made.

+Can the game damage my machine?

No. Worst case it uses a lot of memory and GPU time, and a tab that runs out of memory is closed by the browser.

+Does it need a specific browser version?

The rebuilt version needs WebGPU, which narrows the browser list. The fan project is more forgiving, but neither works well on an outdated browser.

+Should I use incognito mode?

Only as a test, since it disables extensions and clears cache. It is a useful way to confirm that an extension was the cause, not a way to play every session.
